Bayou Vista is at risk for the following types of emergencies:
While the City of Bayou Vista participates in the Galveston County Emergency Management plan, individual residents should prepare well in advance to take the appropriate steps to ensure their safety. This article describes the Emergency Procedures and provides other guidance. The two most common emergency responses are evacuation and sheltering-in-place (see above information). Hurricane Evacuation Procedures can be ordered by the County Judge or Mayor of a municipality.

| Hurricane Categories Hurricanes are classified in five categories, as shown in the table below. Bayou Vista is at risk from ALL five categories; residents should always consider evacuating when a hurricane is forecast. |

The greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane comes from the accompanying storm surge, which can be from 4-feet to over 24-feet. To put this in perspective, mean sea level is 3-4 feet below the tops of bulkhead Bayou Vista; piers for homes are typically 8-12 feet. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Monitoring Hurricanes Residents should monitor the progress of hurricanes, particularly if landfall in this area is expected. The National Weather Service issues a watch if hurricane-force winds are possible within 36 hours (sometimes 48 hours) or a warning if hurricane-force winds are expected within 24 hours. Radio and television stations broadcast watches and warnings and provide other weather-related information. For those of you with Internet access, Bayou Vista's unofficial website has agreed to post public information bulletins on http://www.bayouvista.com and the Bayou Vista Message Board. Weather information internet links are also available on this website at: http://www.bayouvista.com/bvweath.htm |
